UQ Sporting Scholarships

Sport is an integral part of student life at The University of Queensland (UQ).

Since 1990, UQ – in partnership with Alumni Friends of The University of Queensland and UQ Sport – has proudly been offering sporting scholarships and athlete support programs to assist exceptional athletes balance their studies with the demands of elite-level sport.

With an excellent reputation for achievement in the elite sporting arena, UQ boasts over 55 Wallabies, numerous national cricketers, multiple Olympians and many other world-class athletes. All have benefited from the outstanding sporting facilities and services the University and UQ Sport has to offer.

All sporting scholarship holders receive the following benefits:

  • Free academic tutoring
  • Free access to the full range of UQ Sport health and fitness facilities
  • Free athlete workshops in sports nutrition, recovery and fatigue, athlete preparation, peaking for competition and more
  • Academic liaison and support
  • Induction program for first year students
  • Access to the athlete lounge
  • Additional funds to access sports psychology, sports massage, strength and conditioning programs, physiotherapy, podiatry and nutrition consultations
  • Nutritional cooking classes

Scholarships and Support Programs Available

UQ Sports Achievement Scholarship

Established in 2008, UQ Sports Achievement Scholarships are awarded to new and current undergraduate students who display elite ability and excel in their chosen sport. These year-long scholarships are funded by donors and by The University of Queensland to encourage and support scholarship holders to reach their full potential both in their studies and in their sport.

Clem Jones Sporting Scholarship

Established in 2000, Clem Jones Sporting Scholarships are awarded to new and current undergraduate students who demonstrate the potential to perform at a high level in their chosen sport. These three year-long scholarships are funded by an annual donation from the late Dr Clem Jones AO to encourage and support scholarship holders to continue performing at a high level and achieve further sporting success throughout their time at university.

UQ Sport Scholarship Ambassador Program

The UQ Sport Scholarship Ambassador Program was introduced in 2010 to provide support services to high performing athletes who are ineligible for the other scholarships on offer. This program is available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as students of all nationalities. These year-long programs are awarded based on the students’ past sporting achievements in their chosen sport and provide comprehensive support services to continue to nurture their sporting abilities.

The King's College Sporting Scholarship

King's College Sporting Scholarships are awarded to new and current undergraduate and postgraduate students who display an exceptionally high standard of performance in their chosen sport. These year-long scholarships are only available to students accepted to King’s College and are granted to students who agree to play their sport for King’s College in the Inter-College Competition while also playing for the relevant UQ sporting club.

The King’s College and UQ Rugby Academy Scholarship

An initiative of the UQ Rugby Academy and King’s College, the purpose of the King’s College and UQ Rugby Academy Scholarship is to assist students who have demonstrated that they are capable of playing Rugby Union at a high standard. There are two year-long scholarships available each year for students accepted to King’s College and who are also members of the UQ Rugby Academy.

High Performance Passes

The High Performance Pass (HPP) is designed to maintain the strength of all athletic programs at UQ and encourage student athletes to continue competing as an elite athlete while studying.

HPP holders receive the following support services:

  • Academic liaison and support
  • Heavily discounted access to facilities with 50% off UQ Sport Gold Memberships
  • Additional funds to access sports psychology, sports massage, strength and conditioning programs, physiotherapy, podiatry and nutrition consultations

Athletes may be nominated by UQ sporting clubs or identified through the UQ Sport Academy. Potential HPP athletes are asked to submit a one page sporting resume to the Athlete Career and Education (ACE) Advisor. The UQ Sport Academy High Performance Manager will make the final decision to appoint High Performance Passes.

UQ Sport Athlete Funding Program

This program aims to support UQ athletes who have been selected to represent the University at a World University Games, World University Championships, or other open world sporting event.

A maximum of $500 per athlete per calendar year is available. The UQ Sport Academy High Performance Manager will determine the value of each individual funding application.
