Why going holistic will stop you going ballistic

  • Haven't you heard? Yogi's do it better

Between bulging biceps, spandex-sporting sweat storms and prehistoric grunts that signal BEAST MODE ON, it’s easy to see why the weights room scores high on the intimidation scale. Being committed to a healthy lifestyle shouldn’t land you in panic mode, especially when we exercise to de-stress. If the old adage ‘no pain, no gain’ isn’t exactly your idea of a good time, a holistic hangout could be the cure to your workout woes.

Holistic health is more than a pursuit of unlimited flexibility, discovering the ultimate green juice or a desire to look good in yoga pants. Taking a holistic approach to life is believing all parts of your body are interconnected. A holistic workout trains all different parts of an intricate muscle fibre in one session, like in a yoga, Pilates or stretch class.

Ready to drop and give us Zen? Quit reaching for the Dettol and find out why being able to downward dog like a boss is your golden ticket to fit.

Namaslay your worries

Keep calm and stretch from your head to your toes, relieving the weight of daily activity that causes physical and mental strain. Inhale the benefits of getting bendy, as touching your toes relaxes your muscles, lowering the levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Trigger the body’s natural relaxation response with deep breathing in yoga, and grasp physical postures in Pilates that will teach you the ability to shift thoughts, and ultimately control your emotions. The hardest part will be returning to the daily grind post-class when you’re as stretched out as an Italian pizza base.

Flex your warrior muscles

Whoever said that 10 seconds goes by fast has never been to a Pilates class. Forget the myth that a good workout has you huffing, puffing and dripping in sweat – we’ll take slow, controlled movements that work your core muscle groups, thank you! Callisthenic-based workouts (think yoga and pilates) hone in on our body’s deeper muscles, strengthening from the inside out. By bending into shape in a couple of Pilates classes a week, you’ll soon discover a set of muscles you never knew existed.

Recharge your chakras

Unplug mentally in a moment of stillness, boosting your energy by recharging your mental strength. Escape the Lululemmings in the cardio corner in favour of a darkened yoga studio – the perfect place to find your inner bliss. Allow the slow flowing movements of a holistic class to refresh your mind and encourage inner peace, inspiring a renewed sense of wellbeing.

Snub high intensity, strenuous workouts that can do as much harm as good in favour of instilling a sense of calm while toning your buns. There’s no need to shy away from holistic classes simply because your body doesn’t morph into a pretzel on command. Everyone was a beginner at some point, and we’ve all fallen out of a tree (pose) at least once before!

Keen to get bendy? Find your ‘om’ in one of our many holistic health classes, including Vinyasa, Flow Hatha, Gentle Yoga, Pilates and BodyBalance. See you there!
