Why tango is one of the best partner dances to learn

There is an endless list of why the tango, a South American ballroom dance, is arguably one of the best partner dances ever.

However, it's also one of the hardest partner dances to master but there’s no doubt that learning the tango is a worthwhile challenge.

Here’s why:

  • There’s no dance like it. It’s passionate, exciting and creative. Never will you hear the tango described as a dull dance.

  • “How is tango dancing creative?” You ask. Tango music can be interpreted differently from dancer to dancer. The music has multiple layers, meaning that every couple can dance the dance in a different way.

  • The fluid movements of tango dancing mean that it’s non-stop cardio and helps to develop your flexibility.

  • It’s a dance that unites people. It’s social, fun and even romantic. The tango is about teamwork and requires you to be able to connect with and trust your dance partner, whoever they are. Cooperation is key.

  • It’s a dance that involves leading, following and a whole lot of multitasking. The tango is a great teaching tool for the wannabe multitasker.

  • Learning the tango can help you focus. It is a mental challenge as well as a physical one, and so takes a lot of concentration to master.

  • Tango is not sequences of steps and learned moves. It is more like riding a bicycle, it becomes second nature. You learn to use your instincts to read your partner’s intentions.

  • Tying in with the creative aspect of tango, the dance is open to individual interpretation which means it’s also a great way to express yourself and build self-confidence.

  • Dancing is one of the best stress relievers and the amount of energy tango uses, both physically and mentally, means that you can forget the day’s stresses and dance your troubles away.

  • Good posture is incredibly important in tango. Not only can tango help you to improve your posture during the dance, but also in everyday life.
