Club and Sports Awards Criteria

UQ Sport presents a number of awards to recognise sporting excellence and the role of support personnel, such as coaches and administrators.

SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR

Sportsman of the Year should be a male who is either a current student or recent graduate of The University of Queensland. This award is granted not only for excellence in sport, but also for contribution to university life during the award period.

SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR

Sportswoman of the Year should be a female who is either current student or recent graduate of The University of Queensland. This award is granted not only for excellence in sport, but also for contribution to university life during the award period.

COACH OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Coach of the Year Award is awarded to a UQ Sport Club coach with outstanding achievements in their sport or sporting event.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Coaching achievement during the award period;
  • Completion of at least a Level 1 National Coaching Accreditation Scheme Course;
  • Application of appropriate and accepted training theory and coaching principles to improve the level of performance of the team and / or the individual athlete;
  • Presentation of a positive image of coaching and the role of the coach;
  • Respect for officials, opponents and supporters as enunciated in the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme’s Code of Ethics;
  • Demonstration of a concern for the athlete’s career and life outside the sporting environment; and
  • Must conform to the Australian Sports Commission’s Anti-Doping Policy.

CLUB VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Club Volunteer of the Year award is designed to recognise the valuable contribution that volunteers make to their UQ Sport Club and university sport.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Actively contributed to the objectives of a UQ Sport Club in a volunteer capacity during the award period;
  • Played an active role in assisting with the delivery of programs and services to the members of the club;
  • Does not receive remuneration for their contribution to the UQ Sport Club (except reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses); and
  • Presentation of a positive image for the club, the University and UQ Sport.

CLUB SERVICE AWARD

The Club Service award is awarded to UQ Sport Club member(s) who have rendered exceptional service to their club and to UQ Sport. Typically, the awardee would have completed at least seven (7) years of club service.

CLUB ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Club Administrator of the Year award gives recognition to a UQ Sport club administrator who has advanced the professionalism and results of their club.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Team / player arrangements in relation to competition are timely and adequate;
  • Club responds to UQ Sport requests within the timeframe requested;
  • Club members respond well to requests for nominations for Northern and Australian University Games teams;
  • Club reports and finances are in good order and submitted on time;
  • Club members are well organised; and
  • Professional development of administrator (eg: ASSA – Australian Society of Sports Administrators course completed).

HULBERT BURSARY AWARD

The Hulbert Bursary Award (named after Geoff Hulbert, the first employee of the University of Queensland’s Sports Association), is a much coveted club award. The winning club receives $5,000 plus the perpetual trophy.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Club membership: growth and maintenance;
  • Sporting attainment during the year in fixtures and Australian University Sporting Events;
  • The general cooperation of the club and its executive in activities during the award period; and 
  • General improvements and progress of the club during the award period.

PRESIDENT'S CUP

The President's Cup is awarded to the Club that has achieved an outstanding performance at an Australian University Sport sanctioned event (eg: University Games) and/or an exceptional overall performance in the relevant competition(s) the Club competes in.

Eligibility criteria:

The awarded Club must win the Australian University Sport Championship trophy and/or the premiership, or equivalent title, in their sport during the award period, in a competition where more than five (5) teams compete. Special circumstances are considered.

CLUB ALL-ROUNDER OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Club All-Rounder is awarded to the student club member that has achieved outstanding results and contributed to the development of their club.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Current student or recent graduate of the University of Queensland;
  • Active participant in the club (athlete or administrator/office bearer) during the award period;
  • Supportive of the club operations;
  • A regular volunteer for club events during the award period; and 
  • Achieving sound academic results during the award period.
