UQ Sport 1500m Classic

Since its inception in 2004, the UQ Sport 1500m Classic has been a regular fixture in the Queensland Athletics calendar, kicking off the track and field season!

The 2017 event, to be held at the UQ Sport Athletic Centre on Thursday 2 November, provides elite-level athletes an early opportunity to achieve a Commonwealth Games qualifier in the 2017/2018 domestic season.

The event features a range of 1500m events – including Race Walking and elite-level Men’s and Women’s running races. Athletes of all ages – from primary and secondary school students to Masters and Open age groups – flock from across Queensland to take part, with all races seeded based on performance.

This year, $4,800 in prize money is up for grabs, including $1,200 that will be pocketed by the winners of the Men’s and Women’s 1500m Classic races. In other events, placegetters will be awarded cash or a voucher, with all top-three finishers receiving a unique plaque associated with this event.

Once again we’ll be live streaming the elite-level races, with partial coverage of all other events, meaning athletes, family and friends from all over the world will have the chance to tune in!

Confirmed Entrants

Australian middle-distance runners Brittany McGowan and Jordan Williamsz will return to defend their 1500m Classic titles at this year’s event.

McGowan will chase her fourth victory when she lines up in the Women’s 1500m Classic.

The 2016, 2013 and 2012 winner enters the event in impressive form having won the Women’s Elite 1500m race at September’s Mitchell Street Mile in Darwin.

She also competed for Australia in the 800m at August’s IAAF World Championships in London, and in June, set a personal best 1500m time of 4:12.14 at the Göteborg Folksam GP in Sweden.

Zoe Buckman – one of Australia’s premier 1500m runners – will also contest Women’s Classic race.

The 28-year-old was a 1500m Semi-Finalist at both the 2016 Rio and 2012 London Olympic Games, and is a three-time national 1500m champion (2011, 2013 and 2014).

Buckman made the 1500m Semi-Final at this year’s London World Championships, and finished sixth in 1500m Final at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow.

Defending Men’s 1500m Classic champion Williamsz made the 1500m Semi-Finals at the 2017 World Championships, and was a member of Australia’s 4x800m team that finished fourth at the 2017 IAAF World Relays in The Bahamas.
