World University Games and Championships

Teams are selected by the National Sporting Organisation in conjunction with Australian University Sport to represent Australia in the World University Championships and World Universiade events.

The Universiades are multi-sport events resembling the Olympic Games and are held in the odd numbered years while the World University Championships are single sport events held in the even numbered years.

What are the options?

Summer Universiade (World University Summer Games)

The Summer Universiade is held every two years under the banner of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Teams chosen to represent Australia at the Summer Universiade are selected in consultation with National Sporting Organisations.

Staged in various cities throughout the world, this is a great opportunity to take your sporting talent overseas to compete for your country. The Summer Universiade involves competitions in 14 compulsory sports and some optional sports determined by the host.

Compulsory sports include: athletics, basketball, fencing, football, gymnastics (artistic and rhythmic), swimming, diving, judo, water polo, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, and beach volleyball

Winter Universiade (World University Winter Games)

The Winter Universiade is held every two years under the banner of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Teams chosen to represent Australia at the Winter Universiade are selected in consultation with National Sporting Organisations.

Staged in various cities throughout the world, this is a great opportunity to take your talent for a winter sport overseas to compete for your country. There are 10 compulsory sports that make up the Winter Universiade and additional optional sports can be determined by where in the world the events are held.

Compulsory sports include: alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined, biathlon, ice hockey, skeleton, figure skating and short track speed skating.

World University Championships

The World University Championships are held every two years under the banner of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Teams chosen to represent Australia at the World University Championships are selected in consultation with National Sporting Organisations.

Staged in various cities all over the world, this is a great opportunity to take your sporting talent overseas to compete for your country. Separate events for different sports are held throughout the year in different countries across the globe. This is an opportunity not to be missed!

Sports include: 3 v 3 basketball, archery, beach volleyball, canoe sprint, cross country, cycling, karate, netball, orienteering, rowing, Rugby 7’s, sailing, shooting, triathlon, water ski and weightlifting.
