UQ Health and Recreation Centre Program
Construction on the new health and recreation centre program was due to start in April 2020. Commencement of this project is deferred due to COVID-19.
The University of Queensland’s $64.49 million Health and Recreation Centre Program will be among the first of its kind for an Australian university.
The new precinct will be located on Blair Drive, adjacent to the UQ Sport Tennis and Aquatic Centres. It will house a state-of-the-art Fitness Centre, GP practice and a student-led sports and musculoskeletal clinic all in one convenient and vibrant location.
Featuring a variety of interchangeable spaces catering for an array of health and wellbeing activities, the new three-level Fitness Centre will be 1,500m² larger than the existing UQ Sport Fitness Centre.
An adjacent sports hall will include two full-sized playing courts, and a dedicated area for alternative sports with optimal viewing areas for spectators.
This significant increase in capacity and contemporary design will support a more adaptable and flexible approach to delivering a customer experience, including new and emerging programs and trends.

Key spaces in the new facility include:
- Gym: single-level cardio and weights gym, with functionality to create free-flowing or segmented workout areas.
- Group Fitness: sprawling single-level space equipped to stage a variety of Group Fitness programs and functional fitness activities.
- Holistic Health & Wellness: a top-floor studio, with space linked to an outdoor terrace, will stage an array of Group Fitness classes such as Yoga and Pilates.
As part of the project, new toilet, changing rooms and function space amenities will also be built to cater to UQ Sport Tennis Centre, UQ Tennis Club and Saint Lucy’s Café patrons.
