Hip hop is a style of street dance that originated in NYC around the early 1970s.

With a backdrop of hip hop or rap music, hip hop dancing involves moves such as poppin’, lockin’, krumpin’ and dare we say, twerkin’. It’s a dance that’s energetic, exciting and always evolving.

Unsurprisingly, hip hop is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, dance styles of today.

Here’s why:

  • It’s fun, funky and fast paced – you won’t even realise how much effort you’re putting in, the beat just keeps you moving.
  • Hip hop dance moves are fast and explosive to match the tempo of the music. It’s a high intensity workout that will boost your strength and stamina.
  • With so many different types of hip hop dance, from breakdancing to robotting, you’ll be getting the benefits of cross training and varying your workout enough to help keep you motivated.
  • Many hip hop dance moves have something in common – the majority are full body moves. So shaking your booty and busting these moves can burn up to 400 calories an hour.
  • Take what you’ve learnt in your dance lessons home. Just crank up the radio, practice your moves and have your own hip hop dance party round the house.
  • Train your brain to remember choreographed routines. It’s a great way to boost your memory and learning new moves can also help with your coordination in other areas.
  • One of the great things about hip hop dancing is that it’s informal and improvisational. Once you’ve learnt the basics, you’ll be set for some super cool freestyle dance-offs on the dance floor – if you’re brave enough!
  • Not bold enough to bust your moves in the spotlight? You can still look awesome on the dance floor and enjoy the social side of hip hop dancing on a Saturday night in the city.
