Can Swim & Para-swimming

UQ Sport aims to build an inclusive swimming community, giving opportunity to all swimmers to progress their skills in the water.

Our Can Swim Program aims to assist individuals to achieve their swimming potential, improve water safety and other skills such as coordination, strength, endurance and self-esteem, which can then be transferred to activities outside of the pool. The program caters for children and adults with a range of disabilities and offers assistance beyond that which is supplied in mainstream classes. UQ Sport Can Swim is tailored to meet the needs of individuals with physical, psychological and intellectual disabilities.

Our Para-swimming Development Squad offers progression in a customised senior squad environment, giving swimmers access to advanced stroke correction and competition training.

If you are interested in our Can Swim classes or Para-swimming Development Squad, please contact our Aquatic Centre.

Para-swimming Development Squad

UQ Sport’s Para Swimming Development Squad program is a Brisbane-first, catering to swimmers with physical, visual, intellectual, and behavioural impairments of all ages and abilities.

Introduced in-line with UQ Sport’s vision to be recognised as a performance centre for Para Swimming ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics, the Development Squad is a natural progression from our Can Swim Learn-to-Swim program.

It provides a pathway for individuals who are ready to progress their swimming by participating in a regular squad program, or those who are transitioning into competition.

Led by experienced and inclusive Para Swimming coaches, the Development Squad focuses on enhancing each participant’s technical skills, with an emphasis on clean swimming, optimising starts and turn techniques.

All participants must demonstrate appropriate swimming skills to ensure their safety and suitability in an aquatic environment, and an evaluation is required prior to enrolment.

For more information on the program, or to arrange an evaluation, please contact our Aquatic Centre team.
