Can Swim & Para-swimming

UQ Sport aims to build an inclusive swimming community, giving opportunity to all swimmers to progress their skills in the water.

Our Can Swim Program aims to assist individuals to achieve their swimming potential, improve water safety and other skills such as coordination, strength, endurance and self-esteem, which can then be transferred to activities outside of the pool. The program caters for children and adults with a range of disabilities and offers assistance beyond that which is supplied in mainstream classes. UQ Sport Can Swim is tailored to meet the needs of individuals with physical, psychological and intellectual disabilities.

Our Para-swimming Development Squad offers progression in a customised senior squad environment, giving swimmers access to advanced stroke correction and competition training.

Can Swim

For over 15 years, UQ Sport’s Can Swim program has been helping individuals of all ages and abilities reach their swimming potential, improve water safety, and develop valuable skills such as coordination, strength, endurance, confidence, and self-esteem.

The program is designed for children and adults with a wide range of health conditions, offering support beyond what is available in mainstream swimming classes.

Classes run year-round during school terms on selected afternoons, with sessions tailored to each participant’s needs. Most sessions are one-on-one, providing focused attention in a supportive environment. Sessions can last from 30 to 60 minutes and take place in heated indoor or outdoor pools.

The program actively reduces barriers to participation, making swimming accessible for all. Accessibility features include a hoist, a ramp, a water wheelchair, and on-site disability parking.

All lessons are delivered by accredited teachers with specialised Access and Inclusion Swimming certification, ensuring the highest standards of safety and teaching.
