Sport is an integral part of student life at The University of Queensland (UQ).
Since 1990, UQ – in partnership with UQ Sport and valued supporters – has proudly been offering sporting scholarships and athlete support programs to assist exceptional athletes balance their studies with the demands of elite-level sport.
With an excellent reputation for achievement in the elite sporting arena, UQ is proud to support student-athletes from a wide range of sports. UQ has seen its student-athletes excel at the highest international levels, including at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games. UQ’s Sporting Scholarships currently support Australian and Queensland elite student-athletes from sports such as Athletics, AFL, Cricket, Cycling, Gymnastics, Hockey, Mountain Biking, Netball, Orienteering, Rowing, Rugby, Squash, Surf Life Saving, Tennis, Swimming, Touch Football, Volleyball, Water Polo. All have benefited from the outstanding sporting facilities and services the University and the UQ Sport Elite Athlete Program has to offer.
All sporting scholarship holders receive the following benefits:
- Access to the UQ Sport Elite Athlete Program
- Free academic tutoring and study group support (where available)
- Free access to the full range of UQ Sport health and fitness facilities
- Free personal and professional development support, including workshops on academic skills, career planning, sports nutrition and much more
- Academic liaison and advocacy to balance elite commitments with study
- Induction program for first year students
- Free or discounted support through UQ referral networks, including Sport Psychology and Sports Dietician consultations

Current UQ Sporting Scholarship Recipients
In 2022, The University of Queensland awarded 47 Sporting Scholarships to student-athletes, with Australian and Queensland representatives among the beneficiaries.

UQ Sports Achievement Scholarship
Established in 2008, UQ Sports Achievement Scholarships are awarded to new and current undergraduate students who display elite ability and excel in their chosen sport. These year-long scholarships are funded by donors and by The University of Queensland to encourage and support scholarship holders to reach their full potential both in their studies and in their sport.
Clem Jones Sporting Scholarships
Established in 2000, Clem Jones Sporting Scholarships are awarded to new and current undergraduate students who demonstrate the potential to perform at a high level in their chosen sport. These three year-long scholarships are funded by an annual donation from the late Dr Clem Jones AO to encourage and support scholarship holders to continue performing at a high level and achieve further sporting success throughout their time at university.
Wensley Sporting Scholarship
The Wensley Sporting Scholarship is designed to support students with financial need that are competing at an Elite Level in a Sport Australia recognised Sport. Selection of the award is based on applicant’s demonstrated financial need and sporting achievement.
UQ Sport Scholarship Ambassador Program
The UQ Sport Scholarship Ambassador Program was introduced in 2010 to provide support services to high performing athletes who are ineligible for the other scholarships on offer. This program is available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as students of all nationalities. These year-long programs are awarded based on the students’ past sporting achievements in their chosen sport and provide comprehensive support services to continue to nurture their sporting abilities.
UQ Sport Competition Subsidy
The UQ Sport Competition Subsidy provides funding to assist talented UQ student athletes with out-of-pocket competition costs to compete at eligible international and national sporting events. Find out more including guidelines and the application form.
