Sport is an integral part of student life at The University of Queensland (UQ).

The UQ Sport Competition Subsidy provides funding to assist talented student athletes at UQ to assist with out-of-pocket competition costs to compete at eligible national and international sporting events.

What are the options?

UQ Sport Competition Subsidy Guidelines
1. What is the UQ Sport Competition Subsidy?

The UQ Sport Competition Subsidy 2017 provides funding to assist talented student athletes at The University of Queensland (UQ) with out-of-pocket competition costs to compete at eligible international and national sporting events. This program, funded through Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is an initiative of UQ Sport and administered by UQ Sport Academy.

2. Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the UQ Sport Competition Subsidy applicants must be:

  1. Currently enrolled and studying at UQ as a domestic student; and
  2. Have confirmation of selection and competition at a recognised event in one of the three performance categories listed at Item 6 – What is the available funding? and
  3. Have UQ Sport membership of service fees paid in full; and
  4. Have completed all application requirements; and
  5. Submit the application personally with payment details matching the UQ student-athlete applicant. Applications cannot be received by a third party e.g. a parent, club, team, event or organisation.
3. What is a recognised event?

A recognised event is a competitive sporting event that is:

  1. Endorsed by a national and / or international sporting organisation 

       ​and

  1. The representative team must be selected by an Australian Sports Commission and / or Australian University Sport affiliated sporting organisation (click here for endorsed sports)

and

  1. Determined by UQ Sport to be a legitimate national or international event
4. What can be funded?

Application for the UQ Sport Competition Subsidy does not guarantee subsidy funding.

The UQ Sport Competition Subsidy can only be used to offset out-of-pocket competition costs directly associated with the nominated sporting event.  These can include the following:

  • Flights to and from the nominated event
  • Accommodation at the nominated event
  • Competition registration fees
  • Event specific uniforms
  • Other eligible items as determined by UQ Sport at its absolute discretion

Out-of-pocket competition costs are costs directly associated with the nominated sporting event less other competition subsidies and event prize money the UQ student-athlete may have received for this event e.g. other sporting grants or subsidies. The total subsidy will not exceed the specified annual limit or performance category limits.

In cases where the number of applications exceeds the UQ Sport Competition Subsidy budget, eligible UQ student-athletes will receive a lower percentage of their out-of-pocket competition costs and in extreme cases, some eligible UQ student-athletes may not receive any subsidy.

A subsidy will only be approved post-event (see item 10 of Guidelines).

Incomplete applications will not be processed.

5. What will not be funded?

The following items and costs are not eligible for the UQ Sport Competition Subsidy:

  • Meals
  • Alcohol
  • Undefined sports levy
  • Australian University Games and Northern University Games. Please click here for further information.
  • Personal Items
  • Sporting Equipment
  • Spending Money
  • Social Engagements
  • Training expenses not incurred at the event
  • Telephone and data expenses
  • Loss of income
  • Medical and health related expenses
  • Insurances not included in the competition fees
  • Spectator tickets or access to other events
  • Expenses for family members, Team mates, Coaches or other parties attending the event
  • Other expenses as determined by UQ Sport at its absolute discretion

 

6. What is the available funding?

UQ Sport Competition Subsidy can provide eligible UQ student athletes with a percentage of eligible out-of-pocket expenses, at 3 performance categories, up to an annual limit of $2,000.

Eligible UQ student athletes can apply for a competition subsidy at each of the performance categories once per sport, per calendar year, up to the annual limit of $2,000.

  • Australian Team or State Team; and
  • Competing at a regional international competition e.g. Oceania, Trans-Tasman, Asia-Pacific; or
  • Competing at a national championships (not including Australian University Games).

  • Individual or member of a UQ Club or College team competing in a sanctioned national or international club championship.
  • Individual or member of a UQ Club or UQ College team competing in a sanctioned national or international intervarsity competition (not including Northern University Games).

7. What are your obligations?

Applicants should:

  • Read and understand the application guidelines before commencing the online application process.
  • Submit an application using the online application form within 28 days post-event, signed by the UQ student-athlete.
  • Submit written confirmation of selection from the relevant national/international sporting organisation and/or the representative team that clearly states the event details, team and relevant competition costs and is signed by the authorised manager or head coach or selection committee member.
  • Provide a breakdown of the competition costs directly associated with the nominated event on the application form. Please see Item 4 - What can be funded? and Item 5. - What will not be funded? for further details.
  • Submit copies of supporting documentation of competition costs e.g. invoices and receipts.
  • Provide a nominated contact from the relevant national/international sporting organisation and/or the representative team responsible for paying competition costs.
  • Successful applicants will be required to sign and return a Subsidy Agreement prior to receiving funds.
  • Apply for a competition subsidy at each of the performance categories once per sport, per calendar year, up to the annual limit of $2,000.
8. How will applications be assessed?
  • UQ Sport will assess applications based on UQ student athlete eligibility, event eligibility, the performance categories and competition costs.
  • UQ Sport will contact the relevant national/international sporting organisation and/or nominated representative to validate the information relating to the UQ student athlete’s competition costs.
  • Competition Subsidy amounts are subject to the number of eligible applications received and the UQ Sport Competition Subsidy budget.
  • Application for the UQ Sport Competition Subsidy does not guarantee subsidy funding.
  • Incomplete applications will not be processed.
  • The assessment decision is final and no appeal regarding a decision will be entered into.
9. How will applications be notified and processed?
  • Successful applicants will receive notification via email from the UQ Sport Academy Manager and receive a Subsidy Agreement which must be signed and returned before the subsidy is transferred electronically.
  • The approved Competition Subsidy amount will then be transferred electronically to the UQ student-athlete’s nominated bank account post-event.
  • Unsuccessful applicants will receive notification via email from the UQ Sport Academy Manager.
  • UQ Sport will endeavour to complete the assessment, notification and payment process within 28 days of receiving a completed application, providing all documentation has been provided by the applicant.
10. What are the application and subsidy periods?

  • Applications must be submitted online and as soon as possible after confirmation of selection.
  • Applications can be submitted post-event. However completed applications must be submitted within 28 days of the conclusion of the event.

12. Terms and Conditions that apply to applications and the subsidy

Applicants must complete the UQ Sport Competition Subsidy application form and agree with the Acknowledgement & Privacy Statement.

Successful applicants will be required to sign and return a Subsidy Agreement prior to receiving funds.

Approval will not be granted if the applicant has any outstanding fees with UQ Sport.

13. Privacy for applicants and organisations

UQ Sport collects the information in the UQ Sport Competition Subsidy application form to assess and process subsidy funding. Information will also be used to help monitor and evaluate UQ Sport programs and resources. UQ Sport may also use the information to promote the UQ Sport Competition Subsidy, Elite Athlete Program or other UQ Sport activity.
