The Academy

The UQ Sport Academy is one of Queensland’s premier providers of high performance services and programs to elite-level athletes, teams and coaches!

The Academy offers strength and conditioning, sports science testing, coaching workshops, athlete counselling and more – supporting the likes of 200+ EAFU-classified student-athletes, and upwards of 60 Sporting Scholarship recipients, who compete at a state, national and international level.

Meet our team

CATERINA BRIGHI

Swim Coach

Caterina (Cat) joined UQ Sport as a Swim Coach at the start of 2017, and has more than six years’ experience teaching and coaching swimming to both children and adults in Australia, Italy and the United Kingdom.

Cat, who holds AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety qualifications, has been involved in the swimming industry for most of her life, both as a national-level swimmer and coach.

Cat’s coaching philosophy is strongly linked to her great passion for swimming and love for sports mentality, which reflects on working hard while having fun to achieve personal goals, as well as learning the values of respect, humility, positive attitude, and teamwork.

Away from the pool, Cat carries out her PhD studies in Medical Imaging at UQ. She also enjoys scuba diving, surfing, hiking, photography, dancing, and travelling.

  • David Heyden

    Head Swim Coach

    Since 2012, David has been the Head Coach of the UQ Sport Academy Swimming program.

    He has a strong affiliation with UQ, having lived in the local community his whole life, and was instrumental in redeveloping the Swim Squad program after the devastation of the 2011 floods.

    David leads a team of motivated and passionate coaches who oversee an extensive Squad of junior and national-level swimmers.

    David’s coaching philosophy centres on selling the love of swimming, and ensuring swimmers enjoy the sport for a lifetime.

    David holds a Silver ASCTA Coaching Licence, and has coached swimmers to State and National Championships.  In 2017, he was a Coach on the Australian Dolphins Swimming Team for the IPC World Championships.

     

  • KATE HUDSON

    Swim Coach

    Kate has been coaching at the UQ Sport Aquatic Centre since 2017.

    For the past five years, she has been a Learn-to-Swim Teacher and Coach, as well as a national-level competitive swimmer.  

    Kate has a strong love of the water and took up the opportunity to coach as she wanted to share her passion with others.

    She is currently studying Exercise Physiology at UQ, and is a valuable asset to the team.

    When Kate’s not on deck coaching or studying, she can be seen in the pool and training for her new passion – triathlons!

  • ROSIE LENNOX

    Swim Coach

    Rosie began coaching at the UQ Sport Aquatic Centre in 2017, and has over five years’ experience working as a Learn-to-Swim Instructor and Swim Coach at various pools around Brisbane and Sunshine Coast.

    She is an accomplished swimmer and surf life saver, having competed at a national level in both sports.

    Rosie is driven by a passion for aquatic sports and working with children, and enjoys assisting swimmers achieve their goals.

    Rosie is studying a Bachelor of Secondary Education at QUT with a major in Physical Education, and in her spare time loves to be in the water keeping up with her water polo and lifesaving competitions. 

  • SAM ARMSTRONG

    Swim Coach

    Sam joined UQ Sport as a Swim Coach at the start of 2017, and has more than 10 years’ coaching experience with premiership-grade clubs (Commercial Swim Club and River City Rapids Swim Club)

    Sam holds ASCTA Bronze coaching qualifications, and is in the process of finalising her Silver level. Prior to coaching, Sam was an open national-level swimmer, making countless finals for both the 50m and 100m Butterfly.

    Sam’s coaching philosophy stems from the long-term athlete development model developed by Swimming Queensland. She has coached national champions, multiple national qualifiers and state medallists.

    Away from the pool, Sam runs her own business as a Sports Dietitian, assisting a large variety of athletes across many sports and age groups.
