World Universiade and Championships

Teams are selected by National Sporting Organisations, in conjunction with UniSport, Australia to represent Australia in World University Championships and World Universiade events.

The Universiades (the name is a combination of the words ‘university’ and ‘Olympiad’) are multi-sport events resembling the Olympic Games.

Staged in various cities throughout the world, the events provide a great opportunity for elite-level student-athletes to compete on the international stage.

SUMMER UNIVERSIADE (WORLD UNIVERSITY SUMMER GAMES)

The Summer Universiade is held every two years under the banner of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Teams chosen to represent the Australian UniRoos at the Summer Universiade are selected in consultation with National Sporting Organisations.

The Summer Universiade involves competitions in 15 compulsory sports, and up to three (3) optional sports as determined by the host nation.

Compulsory sports include: archery, artistic gymnastics, athletics, basketball, diving, fencing, football, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, and water polo.

The 2023 World Summer Universiade will be held in Chengdu, China from 28 July – 8 August 2023.

The 2025 World Summer Universiade will be held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany from 16-27 July 2025

WINTER UNIVERSIADE (WORLD UNIVERSITY WINTER GAMES)

The FISU-hosted Winter Universiade is held every two years, with selection determined by Australia’s National Sporting Organisations.

There are eight (8) compulsory sports that make up the Winter Universiade, and up to three (3) optional sports as determined by the host nation.

Compulsory sports include: alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, ice hockey, short track speed skating, snowboard, and freestyle skiing (compulsory sport, starting in 2021).

The 2023 World Winter Universiade will be held in Lake Placid, USA from 12-22 January 2023.

The 2025 World Winter Universiade will be held in Toino, Italy from 13-23 January 2025.

WORLD UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS

In 1963, FISU launched the World University Championship series, with single sport competitions now staged throughout the year in different countries across the globe.

The World University Championships & World Cup programme currently includes 20+ sports, such as: 3 v 3 basketball, football, beach volleyball, cross country, cycling, sport climbing, rowing, orienteering, and more.

Australian UniRoos selection is determined by National Sporting Organisations.
