Bible and Carins make history at the 40th Great Court Race

Students and staff gathered on Wednesday 21 May 2025, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The University of Queensland’s iconic Great Court Race. This annual tradition challenges competitors to sprint 636 metres around the heritage-listed Great Court.

Emma Bible secured victory in the Women’s event with an impressive 1:48 time. Bible now joins an elite list of Olympic-level runners who have won 3 or more Great Court Race titles.

When asked how she trains for the unique demands of the event, she explained “It’s hard to train for 90-degree turns in a 636m race, you have to go wide for turns, not elbow your competitors and try not to run into any glass windows”.

Looking ahead, Bible added “I have two more years to go with my Education degree at UQ, so I’ll take each year as it comes, because it gets more competitive with new people trialling each year”.

Hunter Carins won the men’s event for the first time in a competitive 1:30 time. He was closely followed by his training partners from the Northside-based track squad Run the North.

Carins remarked on the friendly rivalry within the group, saying “It’s good to get bragging rights over my teammates, and I’m happy to share the podium with them too!”

In addition to the headline event, there was fierce competition in the relays, 70m sprints and the inaugural Mixed Para relay.

The new Mixed Para Relay brought together athletes of all abilities across our sporting community in a dynamic three-stage relay. Relay teams were composed of a frame runner, an ambulant runner, and a wheelchair rugby player, highlighting the depth of talent within the UQ community. The St Lucia Striders featured Malcolm Wilson, Rachael Dodds, and Damien Mortaud, while the inaugural victors were the Great Court Chargers represented by Chloe Tookey, Bridie Judge-Mears, and Conor Tweedy.
