Your club’s management committee (MC) are elected to govern the club on behalf of the membership.
The management committee drives the club. They set the club’s strategic direction and make decisions. The club may involve other volunteers to help with the day-to-day tasks, allowing the management committee more time to engage with members, keep an eye on the club’s strategic goals and lead the club to success.
The MC should have an appropriate and diverse mix of people with the skills and experience necessary to guide the club to achieve its objectives and meet its legal obligations.
Management committee position descriptions
The MC must have at least three individuals, including a president and treasurer, but can also have roles like a vice president and secretary. The secretary, who manages the club’s administration, meetings and correspondence, can be either a MC member or an external appointee.
The MC enables the club to separate governance from operations. Each MC member has specific responsibilities that contribute to the club’s strategic direction, financial health, and operational efficiency.
Read more about the roles of the MC and each position in the section: The role of the committee.
Management committee duties
Management committee members have certain responsibilities, both to their club and under the Associations Incorporation Act. While it’s important to be familiar with these duties and obligations, MC members should also be aware of their rights, which are outlined in the section: Management committee responsibilities.
Workplace health and safety
The management committee also has a responsibility to provide safe workplaces and practices.
Even if your club is purely voluntary, it is best practice to adhere to the principles laid out for paid employees in the Work Health and Safety Act.
This includes understanding risks, following safety procedures, reporting hazards, ensuring access to first aid, participating in regular training and being familiar with emergency procedures.
