UQ athletes achieve success at World Uni Games

Three University of Queensland students have recorded top five placings at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei, Taiwan.

Held biennially, the Universiade – known as World University Games – was attended by more than 7500 university students from 141 nations.

Eleven UQ student-athletes represented Australia’s Uniroos in athletics, gymnastics, judo, swimming, and table tennis.

UQ Athletics Club member Daniel Mowen recorded UQ’s best result, finishing fourth in the Men’s 4x400m Relay.

UQ Sports Achievement Scholarship recipient Michael Mercieca – competing in his third World University Games – placed fifth in the Men’s Horizontal Bar.

Fellow scholarship holder Gemma Cooney finished fourth in the Women’s 4x100m Medley Relay.

The Bachelor of Arts student competed in eight events in total, placing in the top ten in five.

Liam Adcock (Athletics)

  • Men’s Long Jump – 11th

Jessica Pickles (Athletics)

  • Women’s 20km Walk – Disqualified

Simon Greig (Athletics)

  • Men’s 4x100m Relay – 12th

Ellen Wright (Judo)

  • Women’s -57 kilogram – lost to Oana Nicolaescu 10-0 (Repêchage 16)

Gemma Cooney (Swimming)

  • Women’s 50m Freestyle – 17th
  • 100m Freestyle – 10th
  • 200m Freestyle – 13th
  • 50m Butterfly – 23rd
  • 100m Butterfly – 10th
  • 4x100m Freestyle Relay – 9th
  • 4x200m Freestyle Relay – 7th
  • 4x100m Medley Relay – 4th

Will Stockwell (Swimming)

  • Men’s 50m Freestyle – 19th
  • 100m Freestyle – 18th
  • 4x100m Freestyle Relay – 15th
  • 4x100m Medley Relay – 10th

Jake Duffy (Table Tennis)

  • Men’s Singles – 33rd
  • Men’s Doubles – 33rd
  • Men’s Team Event – 17th
