UQ Students bring the Sporting Spirit to UniSport Nationals

The University of Queensland (UQ) set a new benchmark for multi-sport action in Canberra for UniSport Nationals in 2024. Despite competing away from Queensland, UQ Sport sent 16 teams across ten different sports, proudly representing UQ and their unwavering spirit.

  • Women’s Tennis – Champions
  • Mixed Touch Football – Champions
  • Ron Leahy Trophy – North Spirit Champion

The UQ Spirit was proudly on display in the capital, despite the smaller size of the student group. UQ was awarded the Ron Leahy Trophy – North Spirit Champion.

Canberra proved a golden opportunity for students to experience national-level facilities and competition.

Elias Martin competed at renowned Stromlo Forest Park in the Men’s Cycling event: “I’m looking forward to competing on this special track and giving it my all for The University of Queensland.”

Debutant Kallum Rogers found his experience competing in Mixed Netball rewarding: “It’s an honour to represent UQ, and it’s my first time, so competing at this level has been great.”

The bond between the Men’s and Women’s teams made for a loud and supportive environment as the Women’s team were crowned champions in their competition.

Bachelor of Health Science (Nutrition) student, Chyi Lee enjoyed her time competing in Tennis: “This week turned out to be one of the best weeks of my life. Especially because we won gold, and the memories off the court are priceless.”

Exchange student Anastasia Polach’s skills were scouted on campus before her undefeated run at the UniSport Nationals event: “I was playing a casual match at the UQ Sport Tennis Centre and was approached by a tennis coach and asked if I wanted to compete for UQ. I am so happy I agreed because now I have so many new friends in a foreign country. We are all so diverse and super different, doing different degrees but we all came together, united by sport.”
