The University of Queensland has won five medals, including two gold, at 2017 Northern Uni Games (NUG).

A total of 69 student-athletes represented Team UQ at the Games in Rockhampton and Yeppoon, with UQ winning medals in all team-based sports entered.

The University’s Women’s Hockey side – featuring Team UQ captain Alice Lane – claimed a gold medal in dominant fashion.

The 2016 NUG (Sunshine Coast) silver medallists beat hosts Central Queensland University 7-1 in the gold medal match to finish undefeated.

Incredibly, UQ scored 33 goals for the tournament, and conceded only four across its seven matches.

UQ won its second-consecutive NUG Mixed Fours Beach Volleyball gold medal, with Team UQ upsetting Griffith University Gold Coast (GUGC).

GUGC reached the gold decider unbeaten, but were swept aside by UQ in two sets.

UQ’s Men’s Futsal team suffered its only loss of 2017 NUG in its gold medal match against University of the Sunshine Coast, going down 2-0 in a fiercely contested final.

UQ Futsal won a total of seven matches over the four days’ competition, which included a 14-1 demolition of GUGC in the pool stages.

UQ’s Mixed Touch team continued its impressive medal-winning form, picking up a bronze medal after edging James Cook University 7-6 in the third place playoff.

UQ Mixed Touch side has now medalled at three-straight Uni Games, following a gold medal at 2016 Australian Uni Games in Perth, and silver at 2016 NUG.

UQ’s Men’s Basketball team clinched back-to-back NUG bronze medals after beating Queensland University of Technology 75-53 for third place.

Team UQ’s second Men’s Basketball side – UQ 2 – posted five wins for the event to finish 8th overall.

Elsewhere, Nicholas Lim – UQ’s sole competitor in Men’s Golf – recorded a 10th place finish in the four-round tournament at Yeppoon’s Capricorn Resort Golf Course.

Over 1,600 student-athletes across Queensland and northern New South Wales attended 2017 NUG.

Around 300 students are expected to represent Team UQ at 2017 Australian Uni Games (24-29 September) on the Gold Coast.
