Student-athletes at The University of Queensland (UQ) who are competing at either a national or international-level during the semester are encouraged to apply for Elite Athlete Status. This ‘Status’ allows student-athletes access to academic considerations through the Programs and Assessment for Elite Athletes Policy. Once approved for Elite Athlete Status, student-athletes can also access the support and services of the UQ Sport Elite Athlete Program (EAP).
You can only apply for Elite Athlete Status once you are an enrolled student at The University of Queensland. Applications are lodged via the my.UQ student portal. Then follow the ‘My Requests’ section.
Requests for Elite Athlete Status are able to be lodged at any time via the my.UQ student portal. Ideally you should apply prior to class preferencing opening for the Semester, so that you can benefit from the access to timetabling flexibility (where available).
When submitting your request for Elite Athlete Status, you will need to provide a letter from your state or national sporting body, coach or official. This letter will need to detail your elite level training and competition commitments in the Semester you are applying for. This letter needs to be on an official letterhead, signed, dated and in a non-editable format.
Student-athletes will have Elite Athlete Status for the Semester in which they have been approved. If you need Elite Athlete Status for the next Semester, you will need to lodge a new request with updated supporting documentation.
Elite Athlete Status can provide eligible student-athletes access to academic consideration while completing their studies. This can allow for flexibility in class allocations and timetabling, as well as assessment deferment and extensions (where applicable). Once approved for Elite Athlete Status you will also be eligible to join the UQ Sport Elite Athlete Program (EAP). For a full outline of the support and services available to approved elite student-athletes, please download the Elite Athlete Guide from the Elite Athlete Program page, or review the Programs and Assessment for Elite Athletes Policy.
Once approved for Elite Athlete Status, it is recommended you book a consultation with one of our Elite Athlete Program (EAP) staff. EAP staff can help you get organised for the Semester ahead and link you in with the appropriate support network needed. To request an appointment please email us.
