The University of Queensland has won five medals, including two gold, at 2017 Northern Uni Games (NUG). A total of 69 student-athletes represented Team UQ at the Games in Rockhampton and Yeppoon, with UQ winning medals in all team-based sports entered.
The event will feature more than 1,600 competitors from across Queensland and northern New South Wales. The NUG event is one of four regional University Games held simultaneously across Australia, with a range of sports serving as qualifiers for 2017 Australian University Games (AUG) on the Gold Coast (24-29 September).
The ramp and wheelchair-accessible pool is the centrepiece of UQ Sport Aquatic Centre’s $3.4 million redevelopment project, and is temperature set to 29°C year-round. It can cater for up to nine lanes and will be open to lap swimming, as well as selected Learn-to-Swim lessons, Swim Squad sessions and Pool Parties.
The inaugural competition will feature eight universities, with Australian-contracted Women’s Sevens players allocated among the participating teams. Emilee Cherry and Australian teammate Emma Sykes will wear Team UQ colours throughout the Series, which runs from 25 August to 30 September.
The Great Court Race on Wednesday 24 May will be headlined by the prestigious Men’s and Women’s Great Court races – 636-metre sprints around UQ’s state heritage-listed Great Court. First-placegetters in the main races will receive a $1000 bursary donated by Alumni Friends of The University of Queensland.
A total of 57 sporting scholarships have been awarded, with several sports, such as surf lifesaving, futsal and water skiing represented for the first time. UQ Sport Chief Executive Mr Bryan Pryde said the UQ Sporting Scholarship program has grown significantly.
The University of Queensland Hockey Club is set to host iconic Yale University for a women's hockey showdown. The University of Queensland (UQ) Hockey Club will play the United States’ iconic Yale University in an exhibition hockey match at UQ’s new $24 million Synthetic Fields Precinct.
UQ Sport chief executive Bryan Pryde said the Blues awardees would join an exclusive sporting community, which included many of Australia’s sporting greats. “Since 1912, UQ Blues have been awarded to UQ athletes who have achieved exceptional sporting success at a national or international level,” Mr Pryde said.
The 1500m Classic has been the first event on the Queensland Athletics summer calendar since its inception in 2004 and features a range of 1500m events from race walking through to elite men’s and women’s running races - with the program boasting 19 races in total.
The University of Queensland's world-class sports facility, located next to the UQ Centre, is part of a $24 million development funded by the University, in collaboration with UQ Sport and UQ Endowment Fund. The precinct includes two multi-use synthetic fields which feature player dugouts, digital scoreboards and LED lighting.
